Gen 2:7 – “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

God is the one who made us, who created us, and who gives us the life that we breathe in every day. God had a formula for our being – a body of dust plus the breath of God, equals a living soul. It is God who made us, and it is God who sustains us. This fact is overlooked on a daily basis while we steal God’s air and live life for ourselves. Take a deep breath; that is the grace of God giving you physical life. From the beginning God created man to be a monument of His glory and His goodness and His sustaining power of LIFE.

Gen 6:17 – “And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.

As mankind fell into sin, the whole world was plunged into darkness. Instead of man being what he was created to be as a monument of God’s power and grace, mankind corrupted his way and abused the life that God gave. God in turn had to judge that life’s decision to take for granted the breath of God, and so removed that breath of life from the nostrils of fallen man.

Gen 7:22 – “All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.
Gen 7:15 – “And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life.

God made perfect preparation to preserve as much life as would continue to give Him glory, by preparing one single family who was willing to live for God. Led by the obedient Noah, the planned preservation of life upon an ark was accomplished. This one man made a choice to use the breath that God gave him unto the glory and praise of God.

Job 33:4 – “The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.
Job 12:10 – “In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.
Acts 17:25 – “Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

Perhaps there should be a more conscious effort to glorify God with the breath He has given us. We should be more conscious that God is not only allowing us to live physically, but that He is purposefully giving us life daily. It wouldn’t hurt to thank Him for that every day! It would do good for believers to preach this truth to a lost and dying world that they too might recognize the LORD.

Not only is God the Author of all physical life, but He is the Author of all spiritual life as well. The beginning of the body of Jesus Christ through His disciples was by the breath of God:
John 20:22 – “And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:

This new life is granted to us once again by the Spirit of the Living God. It is the Spirit of Christ that gives us new life by faith in the gospel:
1Cor 12:13 – “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

It is by the Spirit of God that we are declared to be His:
Rom 8:9 – “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

And it is that same breath of God that preserves us until His coming again:
Eph 1:13 – “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

Praise be unto our God, who giveth to all life and breath, and offers to all the free gift of that eternal breath of God which imparts everlasting life!
